7 Reasons Parents Will Love ‘Back to the Outback’

It’s got good jokes and Isla Fisher.

Sure, Back to the Outback is for kids. It’s 90 minutes of talking animals, fun dance breaks and feel-good messages that you can put on while making dinner and not feel guilty. But you’ll probably want to watch this one with them. Believe it. There are things for adults in Back to the Outback that will make even the most cynical parents fall in love with the movie. Check out the list below for all the reasons why you’ll be recommending this movie to your own friends, even the ones without kids.

1. Isla Fisher, who lends her voice to Maddie the snake. I mean, who doesn’t love her? She’s a powerful, gloriously redheaded Australian mom of three, an author and married to the hilarious Sacha Baron Cohen. If there is anyone you should trust to lead a comedy about Australia, it’s her.

 2. The Australia of it all. If you haven’t been able to travel Down Under, this film brings you directly to the Outback and Sydney. The animation is so pretty, that it almost makes you feel like you’re actually visiting a new landscape. And isn’t it refreshing to see a kids movie not based in the US?

 3. Cute (and slightly terrifying) animals. There are snakes, Tasmanian devils, a platypus and all of the makings of a very good zoo that you don’t even need to visit. Watching these goofy, quirky animals interact with one another on screen is a nice change of pace after watching something intense like Season 3 of You.

4. There is also a Koala that will steal your heart. His name is Pretty Boy, and he knows how to drive, and he loves his blankie and a good blowout from his team of hairstylists. Which sounds pretty great, honestly.

 5. It’s about embracing your inner “ugly.” There’s no need to put on makeup or change out of your favorite pair of leggings while watching Back to the Outback. No, the movie is all about embracing your differences and the things that make you “ugly,” which is the most beautiful message that you can hear from a very funny film for kids.

 6. The Phil Collins songs playing at random moments in the film, including a public Pretty Boy tribute set to “Against All Odds” and a wild car chase set to “Sussudio” at the end of the film. Petition for him to make a cameo on Emily in Paris next.

 7. Best of all, there are funny jokes for parents, too. You will laugh out loud whenever Frank the spider (played by Mare of Easttown’s Guy Pearce) is on screen. It’s mating season for him, which means that he’s constantly doing his mating dance and hitting on anything with legs, or at least, anything that resembles a stick. He has one job to do (aside from finding a way to the outback) and it’s easy to appreciate a creature that knows what it wants, when it wants it.
