Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton have survived a lot in their careers as action stars: an undercover operation in East Berlin in Atomic Blonde; a deadly airport threat in Carry-On; an immortal revenge mission in The Old Guard; and a worldwide killing spree in Kingsman: The Secret Service. In Apex, the two will face a brand-new challenge: a ruthless game of cat and mouse set in the Australian wilderness that’s now streaming on Netflix.
“It's about a woman who finds herself in the woods with a serial killer — and she has to win,” Theron told Netflix. “This is an action‑adventure, psychological thriller. It’s really a story about survival, not just physically but emotionally, and about finding out what you’re made of.”
“I couldn’t be more excited,” director Baltasar Kormákur (Everest, Adrift) told Tudum last February as filming began. “Working in the rugged, beautiful terrains of Australia with three of the world’s most talented, dedicated actors in Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana is such a joy — even as I put them through the [ringer] in this unique survivor story.”

A grieving woman seeks solace in the wilderness only to become ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a serial killer.

Sasha is a grieving mountain climber who finds herself trapped in the wild with Egerton’s depraved killer on her trail.
“This movie really fired up my brain,” Theron told Netflix. “When I read the script, I couldn’t put it down and it stayed with me. It felt very pure but with great impact. The bite and the kick were so strong in what it was trying to accomplish without bells and whistles, and I loved that.”
Kormákur was thrilled to work on stunt-heavy action sequences with the star of Mad Max: Fury Road and Atomic Blonde. “You couldn’t ask for more,” he told Netflix. “She’s climbing rock faces I wouldn’t go on. The physical endurance she’s shown is incredible, and I think it really shows in the film.”
Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. She’s since been nominated twice more in the same category, for North Country and Bombshell.
Theron has also carved out a niche as a formidable action star, kicking ass in films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, The Old Guard, F9, Prometheus, and Æon Flux. Other film roles include Young Adult, Tully, Long Shot, Kubo and the Two Strings, Hancock, and The Italian Job. She’ll next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey.
Ben is the man on Sasha’s tail, a twisted psychopath with a taste for blood and a hunting skill to match.
“The extremity of the role really appealed to me,” Egerton told Netflix. “When I was offered the chance to play Ben, who is just about the most fucked‑up character I’ve ever played, there was something delicious and irresistible about it.”
Even Egerton’s director was surprised by his performance. “I’d been following his career and knew he was an incredibly talented young man,” Kormákur said. “Even so, he managed to surprise me with how unexpected his choices were, how he gave his character, Ben, a whole new life.”
Egerton burst onto the scene as spy recruit Eggsy in Kingsman: The Secret Service, and went on to play Elton John in Rocketman, ski jumper Eddie Edwards in Eddie the Eagle, and harried TSA agent Ethan Kopek in Carry-On. Egerton was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his performance as FBI operative Jimmy Keene in Black Bird.
Other film and television roles include Tetris Robin Hood, Legend, Testament of Youth, the Sing films, Smoke, and Watership Down.
Tommy is Sasha’s mountain climbing partner.
Bana’s commute to the set of Apex was straightforward: the actor is an Australian native who’s starred in films and television series including Black Hawk Down, Hulk, Troy, Munich, Lone Survivor, Star Trek, Chopper, The Time Traveler’s Wife, The Dry, and Dirty John. He’ll next be seen investigating another national parks murder in Season 2 of his hit series UNTAMED.
Apex is produced by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready for Chernin Entertainment; Ian Bryce for Ian Bryce Productions; Theron, Beth Kono, and A.J. Dix for Secret Menu; and Kormákur for RVK Studios. The film is executive produced by Ray Angelic, Will McCance, and Dawn Olmstead for Secret Menu.

Apex was shot in the rugged landscapes of New South Wales, Australia, home of the Blue Mountains. “For a film like Apex — where the elements and the terrain are characters that loom just as large as the movie stars battling in it — no other country in the world could have taken the place of Australia as our primary location,” Kormákur says. “The unrivaled landscape, studio facilities, and talented crews in New South Wales have been a boon to this production. I want to thank the people of NSW, the NSW government, and the Australian Government’s Location Offset for all the support we’ve received in making this journey possible.”
Apex is now streaming on Netflix.
