When Arnold Schwarzenegger says “I’ll be back,” he really means it. Over the past five decades, the famous Austrian has done almost everything. Before Hollywood, he carved out his own legacy in the bodybuilding world, competing and winning most of his competitions. After retiring from the weights, Schwarzenegger fought beasts and chased after fugitives in a plethora of iconic acting roles. Some would say his most famous role, however, was serving as the governor of California from 2003 to 2011. Talk about having range!

Throughout his long time in the public eye, Schwarzenegger has remained a household name by reinventing himself and his career. With his distinct Austrian accent and iconic physique, he’s starred in some of Hollywood’s most memorable roles. But, as the docuseries reveals, his most distinguishing traits almost prevented him from stepping in front of a camera.
In Arnold, Schwarzenegger recalls his very first acting role in Hercules in New York as the eponymous hero. “I had never taken an acting lesson before. They replaced my voice — I couldn’t speak English purely,” he said. “They told me, ‘Americans want to hear their idols talk like John Wayne, not you.’” Fifty-four years later, Schwarzenegger’s acting career is still going strong. Now, people are trying to impersonate the famous accent that he was told wouldn’t land him any roles.

The Terminator birthed Schwarzenegger’s famous line, “I’ll be back” — but that was never written in the original script. In the Arnold docuseries, director James Cameron reveals, “The line is ‘I’ll come back.’ It wasn’t meant to be a big moment at all.” Instead, Schwarzenegger went against the script and changed the line to make it sound more robotic. The result? An iconic line that is still quoted to this day.

Director Ivan Reitman was skeptical about Schwarzenegger acting in a comedy. After all, the actor had already cemented himself as a leading action star. But Schwarzenegger was determined to work with Reitman some day. “He spoke very well and his intelligence and humor came through,” Reitman says in Arnold, while recalling a time he ran into Schwarzenegger in Aspen. “Later on, Danny DeVito and I were at some Disney Studio screening — and something about seeing those two guys within a week of each other put that idea in my head that they might be the perfect couple in a movie.”

As Schwarzenegger reveals in the Arnold docuseries, he was almost booted from the titular role because producer Dino De Laurentiis didn’t think he could pull off such a challenge. To prove him wrong, Schwarzenegger performed all his own stunts. It took countless hours of samurai sword training, horseback riding lessons and literal bloodshed to prepare for the film. “Eventually, Dino De Laurentiis came to the set. He comes up the steps right up to me, and he says, ‘Schwarzenegger, you’re Conan,’ ” the actor says.
