Prepare to be dazzled as Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, an original anime film, is now streaming. This film marks Shingo Yamashita’s debut in feature-length directing, following his acclaimed work on the opening sequences for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura. Inspired by The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, the film reimagines Japan’s oldest folktale with a modern touch by integrating music, fantasy, and contemporary animation.

Set in the virtual realm of Tsukuyomi, the story unfolds as a live performance marrying original music with Yamashita’s signature style of polished visuals, emotive pacing, and dynamic 3D camerawork to boldly transform this classic tale for a new generation. The voice cast includes Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Anna Nagase as Iroha, and Saori Hayami as Yachiyo.
Iroha Sakayori, a 17-year-old high school student in Tokyo, leads an extremely busy life trying to balance part-time work and academics. She finds peace by watching a popular streamer named Yachiyo Runami, who is the administrator of an online virtual space called Tsukuyomi.
Iroha frequents Tsukuyomi, where people can live different lives and freely pursue their creativity, and she passes the time by supporting Yachiyo and playing battle games to earn a little extra money. On her way home one day, Iroha finds a telephone pole shining with iridescent hues. To her surprise, a baby emerges from the pole. Unable to abandon it, Iroha takes the infant home and watches her rapidly grow into a girl her own age.
"Are you Princess Kaguya?"
The grown-up Kaguya develops a self-indulgent personality. At Kaguya's fervent request, Iroha helps her start streaming in Tsukuyomi. With Iroha as producer and songwriter and Kaguya as streamer and singer, the two grow steadily closer. Little do they know that ominous forces lie in wait, eager to take Kaguya back to the moon.

The soundtrack features the music of prominent producers from the Vocaloid scene, including ryo (supercell) — creator of the Hatsune Miku hit “Melt” — kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot.
The anime film premiered on January 22, 2026. Stream it now.

Kaguya sings "Watashiha Watashinokotoga Suki" ("I like who I am"), an original song composed by HoneyWorks. In the second half of the above trailer, audiences hear "Ex-Otogibanashi" (“Ex-Fairy Tale”), the film’s main theme composed by ryo (supercell) and performed by Yachiyo, a songstress and Tsukuyomi’s administrator.

The animation is produced by Studio Colorido (Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away) in collaboration with Yamashita’s Studio Chromato. Character designs are by Hechima (The Idolmaster Gakuen) and Akihiro Nagae (Drifting Home).
“This is my first full-length original animated film,” Yamashita tells Netflix. “I poured into it everything I’ve learned about visual expression, my love for unique characters, and my deep affection for the internet culture that’s continued since the 1990s. It’s a bright, fun film — so please sit back, relax, and enjoy it!”
