Hellbound Season 2: Everything You Need to Know

Is divine justice real, or are the creatures dragging people to hell part of something else entirely? That’s the question for those living in the world of Hellbound, the dark K-drama fantasy from director Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan, Revelations) and writer Choi Gyu-seok (Awl).

When we left off in Season 1, the religious leader Chairman Jung Jinsu had disappeared, Park Jungja had been resurrected, and Min Hyejin had escaped with baby Toughie despite the child being decreed to damnation. In Season 2, the religious factions the New Truth, the Arrowheads, and Sodo leader Hyejin must grapple with sudden resurrections of the formerly condemned. Is it possible, after all, to defeat the decrees of these supernatural beings?

Hellbound Season 2, which premiered at the 29th Busan International Film Festival in October, stars Kim Sung-cheol, Kim Hyun-joo, and Kim Shin-rock.

What happens in Hellbound Season 2?

Jung Jinsu, founder of the religious cult the New Truth, is back after being condemned to hell for several years. Upon his return, he realizes the dicta of the New Truth and its more extreme sect, the Arrowhead, now rule society. But when Jinsu finds out he’s not the only one who’s come back to the land of the living, he seeks to understand what being resurrected has done to — and for — him. Is resurrection really damnation, as the New Truth preaches, or could it be the path to true salvation?

Is Hellbound based on a book?

Yes, the series is based on the webtoon of the same name by the series director, Yeon, and writer-illustrator Choi.

“When [Choi and I] were working on this story, we were set on creating a world that was comparable to hell, and created by people who are unable to tolerate uncertainty,” Yeon told Variety in 2021. “We wanted to show what the society would look like when convictions are in conflict with one another.”
