Sean Payton is in a timeout, but not for long.
The trailer for Home Team, a new heartwarming comedy from Kevin James and Taylor Lautner, dropped today. James stars as Payton, head coach of the New Orleans Saints. After being suspended by the NFL, he returns to his hometown and reconnects with his 12-year-old son Connor, who plays for a slightly below-average Pop Warner football team. Payton joins forces with the team’s coach, played by Lautner, to lead the boys to (hopeful) victory in between team bonding and eating a gross batch of energy bars.

The film is inspired by real-life coach Sean Payton. Two years after winning Super Bowl XLIV with the Saints, Payton was suspended for the 2012 NFL season as a result of his alleged involvement in the team’s bounty scandal, which involved coaches and players pooling money and paying players to intentionally injure certain opponents during games. While enduring his year-long suspension, Payton served as the offensive coordinator for his son’s team, the Liberty Christian Warriors in Argyle, Texas, using a simplified version of the Saints playbook to go nearly undefeated — not bad for a Super Bowl winner.
Home Team was made by Happy Madison and Hey Eddie Productions, the production companies of Adam Sandler and Kevin James, respectively. Other stars include Rob Schneider, Jackie Sandler and James’ real-life older brother Gary Valentine. The James brothers have previously starred together in James’ hit sitcom The King of Queens, so the family ties are strong.
Catch the film on Jan. 28, and in the meantime, try not to rewatch that moment of the Warriors losing their lunch on an opposing team over, and over, and over again.
