Ten years ago, a comedy about an anthropomorphic horse trying to revive his sitcom career changed the landscape of adult animation forever. Now, BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg has returned to Netflix with a new adult animated series, Long Story Short, which is now streaming.

Long Story Short is an animated comedy about one family, over time. Jumping through the years, we follow the Schwooper siblings from childhood to adulthood and back again, chronicling their triumphs, disappointments, joys, and compromises.

Hailed as one of the best TV shows of all time, BoJack Horseman made history as Netflix’s first original animated series when it debuted on Aug. 22, 2014. According to critics, the award-winning series broke new ground and raised the bar for satire and emotional depth. The long-in-the-tooth equine title character (voiced by Will Arnett) strives for relevancy in the fictionalized Hollywoo, all while battling addiction issues and reckoning with his own toxic behavior and massive ego. BoJack’s stable of human and animal friends consists of unemployed roommate Todd Chavez (Aaron Paul), frenemy Mr. Peanutbutter (Paul F. Tompkins), agent and former girlfriend Princess Carolyn (Amy Sedaris), and ghostwriter Diane Nguyen (Alison Brie).

Unlike the fictional series-within-the-series Horsin’ Around, BoJack hasn’t struggled to stay relevant, and has garnered more than a “colt” following, leading the pack of daring Netflix adult animated series that came later — Big Mouth, Arcane, and Blue Eye Samurai, to name a few.

Long Story Short reunites the BoJack team. Lisa Hanawalt (BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie) is the supervising producer. Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen (BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie, Undone) executive produce for Tornante Television. Corey Campodonico and Alex Bulkley from animation studio ShadowMachine (BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie, Pinocchio) serve as co-executive producers.

Bob-Waksberg told Netflix at the time of Long Story Short’s announcement, “It is legitimately a thrill and an honor to be back doing what I love most: drafting enthusiastic pull quotes for press releases to Hollywood trade publications. Who says you can’t go home again?!”

Has Long Story Short been nominated for or won any awards?

Yes! The animated series won the 2026 Writers Guild of America Award for Animation for the episode “Shira Can’t Cook” written by Mehar Sethi.  It was also recognized with a nomination for Best Animated Series at the Critics Choice Awards, and Abbi Jacobson was nominated for Best Voice Acting - TV/Media for her performance as Shira in the series at the 2026 Annie Awards.
