Similar to some of Netflix’s other mobile game offerings such as Netflix Stories: Virgin River, Money Heist: Ultimate Choice is a story-driven, interactive drama that puts you in control of a brand-new character. Featuring plenty of familiar — as well as a few fresh — faces, the game spins an original tale that expands on the Money Heist universe, essentially serving as a playable season of the popular series.
The game contains all the drama, romance, and tension-ratcheting criminal activity and character conflicts you’d expect from the Professor’s posse of seasoned thieves. The big difference, however, is all these defining elements are shaped by your decisions. As the subtitle suggests, it’s all about presenting critical choices that not only influence your path, but also impact your relationships and, potentially, affect the epic heist at the story’s center.
On the surface, Money Heist: Ultimate Choice will feel familiar to fans of the show. Its story involves an elaborate heist, planned and pulled off by the brilliant Professor and his assembled crew of gun-toting, safe-cracking, security-hacking specialists.
But you won’t find the game’s band of skilled burglars breaking into the Bank of Spain or any of the series other targets. Instead, this all-new yarn rewinds the clock and works as a prequel to the show’s first season.
Serving as a sort of practice run before the big Royal Mint robbery, the game puts you behind the nimble fingers of an expert hacker recently recruited into the infamous group of “Spanish Robin Hoods.” You and your team — which includes fan favorites like Tokyo, Rio, Nairobi, and Berlin — are tasked with infiltrating an art auction at a ritzy museum. But a number of factors, from the protagonist’s personal stake in the job to the unexpected relationship dynamics that evolve throughout the mission, soon complicate matters.

Before becoming one of the gang, you’ll customize your criminal by choosing a male or female avatar, as well as selecting their city-based code name and pronouns. From there, much of your time is spent interacting with the team, guiding and shaping those aforementioned narrative complexities as you progress through the plot’s increasingly taut chapters.
The core gameplay sees you making frequent dialogue selections, usually from a trio of choices that’ll often affect your path forward. Many responses will simply inject a bit of color into your conversations, while more critical decisions might carry more significant, far-reaching consequences that steer the plot and impact your alliances.
Wondering where you stand with your fellow thieves? No problem — you can quickly find out who your real friends, and potential love interests, are by accessing an intuitive, relationship-tracking interface. This same menu will also take you to your growing pile of rewards: collectible items earned through completing objectives and progressing the story.
When you’re not participating in exchanges that could potentially further your personal agenda, earn a character’s respect — or ire — or maybe even spark a romance with one of your partners in crime, you’ll be exercising your security-breaching skills. Ultimate Choice frequently spices up its dialogue-heavy progression with pace-quickening mini-games that might see you puzzling through tangles of surveillance camera wires or deciphering a series of digits and letters to crack codes.
The game is a stand-alone prequel that takes place before the events of both Money Heist and Berlin. It also puts players behind the security-circumventing abilities of an original character, brand new to the Money Heist universe.
Those who wouldn’t know a Salvador Dalí mask if it were staring them in the face needn’t worry about being left in the dark on plot or character details. That said, faithful fans of the series will surely appreciate the game’s many nods to the source material, as well as its vibrant artistic interpretation of the show’s compelling cast of likable law-breakers.
