Idris Elba Will Return as Luther in a New Feature Film

Dermot Crowley and Ruth Wilson will also star.

    Feb. 4, 2026

When a crime wave hits London, you want detective John Luther, played with debonair ingenuity by Idris Elba, on the case. Well, you're in luck — because he’ll return in a second Luther feature film, reuniting with longtime costars Dermot Crowley, as Martin Schenk, and Ruth Wilson, as Alice Morgan. The follow-up to Luther: The Fallen Sun from 2023 will also welcome back director Jamie Payne and screenwriter Neil Cross (who created the flagship mystery series).

“Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me — they’re family,” Cross says. “I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”

The next installment in the Luther universe will explore a murder spree that can only be solved by the titular detective. Keep reading to find out what’s next for Luther.

What is the next Luther movie about?

When a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hits London, Luther is secretly called back into service. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?

Director Payne is excited to wade back into Luther’s murky waters. “Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley,” he says. “I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson. Fans new and old are in for a treat!”
