Party Hard with the First 6 Minutes of ‘Obliterated’

What happens in Vegas might have deadly consequences.

    Nov. 30, 2023

Going undercover at a Las Vegas pool party isn’t your typical mission — but then again, the heroes of Obliterated aren’t your typical government agents.

From the trio behind Cobra Kai (Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald), Netflix’s new action comedy series opens with a sun-soaked, booze-fueled pool party at Drai’s dayclub, but, as the above sneak peek reveals, several of the partygoers aren’t who they initially appear to be.

They’re actually a multidisciplinary team from several different government branches — CIA, Navy, NSA — who are tracking a deadly nuclear device that could level the entire city. The squad consists of leader and CIA intelligence officer Ava Winters (Shelley Hennig), tactical lead and Navy SEAL Chad McKnight (Nick Zano), fellow SEAL Trunk (Terrence Terrell), Marine sniper Angela Gomez (Paola Lázaro), NSA tech genius Maya Lerner (Kimi Rutledge), bomb-defusing expert Hagerty (C. Thomas Howell), and Air Force pilot Paul Yung (Eugene Kim).

As you can see in the clip, they’re surveilling Russian arms dealer Ivan Koslov (Costa Ronin) while surrounded by Vegas partiers who have no idea of the grave circumstances they’ll be in if the team doesn’t secure the weapon in time.

Co-creator Heald tells Tudum that the casting call was a fun one, but there was one problem. “The unfortunate thing was we were shooting in the middle of November, so it was cold in Vegas,” he explains. “Those pools are not warm. There was a lot of wind, so you had to have people who looked like they would be showing up at these pool parties, but also were tough enough and ready enough to be there freezing their butts off in bathing suits with no alcohol.”

So the extras are sober and cold but pretending to be drunk and warm. “Meanwhile, we’re all bundled up, eating a meatball sub, and just saying, ‘Stop shivering. Action,’ ” says Heald.

In other words, this party’s as fake as Winters’ alias — but not nearly as debaucherous as the team’s celebratory party following their victory will be. Unfortunately, after all the booze, drugs, and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake, too. The now-intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world. No pressure.

Obliterated premieres Nov. 30.
