It starts the way many true crime documentaries do: a black screen with white text that reads “The following film contains dramatized scenes and is based on police reports, court records and sometimes contradictory firsthand accounts.” When it comes to The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist, the new three-part docuseries chronicling the escapades of the IRL squad of teenagers who made names for themselves robbing celebrity homes, the emphasis on “sometimes contradictory” should be in bold, underlined, size 72 font.
If you haven’t seen the The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist trailer or if you missed the story the first time around, here’s what you need to know: Back in 2009, a fame-curious teenager named Nick Prugo and his friends started robbing celebrity homes in and around Calabasas, California. Over the next two years, Prugo, sometimes joined by Alexis Neiers and several other teenagers, would enter the homes of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Audrina Patridge and Orlando Bloom, stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of clothing, accessories and cash.
Of course, even the sneakiest schemes are exposed eventually: Prugo, Neiers and the rest of the group were eventually caught and charged for their crimes. The story that unfolded in the media was a feast of early aughts ephemera, complete with buzzy celebs, unreliable teenage narrators and, like all the best juicy scandals, large sums of cash. The status update for everyone involved in Bling Ring is varied, but as the first three minutes of the new docuseries shows, everyone’s got their own side of the story.
