One of the most perplexing figures of the last 50 years, the Zodiac Killer still inspires plenty of questions, theories, and obsession. The serial killer, linked to multiple murders across Northern California in the late ’60s, has been the subject of countless books, movies, and TV shows. “Zodiac was different,” Rita Williams, a former KTVU reporter, says in the trailer. “He got away with it.”

Now, the three-part true crime docuseries This Is the Zodiac Speaking provides a new perspective on the case — with fresh evidence.

What is This Is the Zodiac Speaking about?

Over the course of their decades-long investigation, police have only ever publicly identified one suspect in the Zodiac Killer case, Arthur Leigh Allen, but they never found enough evidence to charge him. This Is the Zodiac Speaking revisits the case once more, with never-before-seen evidence and interviews with people who knew Allen, a former elementary school teacher and convicted sex offender.

The series includes archival footage, along with interviews with local TV reporter Williams, who sat down with Allen in an on-camera interview before his death in the early ’90s, as well as investigative reporter Robert Graysmith, who extensively covered the case in his 1986 book Zodiac. Allen’s former students and surviving friends of Zodiac’s victims are also interviewed.

But the primary focus of the docuseries is the Seawater family, who say Allen played an integral role in their youth, caring for them and taking them on trips. “We realized we had been to all the murder sites before the murders,” David Seawater says in the trailer. Even law enforcement has never seen what the Seawater kids, now adults, are about to share.
