Strap in and prepare for foot races and high-speed chases through the streets of Long Beach, California, in a brand-new limited comedic series  from the mind of rapper, actor, and producer Vince Staples.

Launching in February, The Vince Staples Show stars Staples as, well, Vince Staples and explores his unpredictable life over the course of five satirical tales. This show was years in the making: He previously flexed his writing, acting, and directing muscles with music videos and even episodic shorts. While those experiences informed him as he made this series, he still felt as though he was wading into uncharted territory. 

“The biggest difference between doing this versus the way I had done it before was knowing the rules in order to break the rules,” he tells Tudum. “It’s about respecting, understanding, and conceptualizing the initial ideas properly to create the thing you want to create, in a way that works in television.”

What’s The Vince Staples Show about?

In the limited comedic series, Vince Staples navigates life as a kind of famous, kind of rich, kind of criminal (but not really) rapper. He’s constantly thrust into adventures while also figuring out how to appease his mother, girlfriend, and all those haters from his past who want a piece of him.

Staples considers the show a full display of day-to-day reality — the good, the bad, and the things we’ve grown so accustomed to experiencing that they don’t carry any distinction. “A lot of it comes from a real place. It’s just life,” he says. “Usually people pick, ‘this is a comedy or this is a drama’ [or] ‘this is serious, you can’t make it a joke.’ We lived in-between those moments, because that’s what life is. Sometimes things aren’t supposed to be funny but end up being hilarious. I just wanted to make sure I was showing the light sides of darkness and the dark sides of lightness.”

Who’s in the cast? 

Along with Staples, the recurring guest cast includes Vanessa Bell Calloway (Coming to America, This Is Us) and Andrea Ellsworth (#BlackAF, Gentefied). You can also expect appearances from Naté Jones, Arturo Castro, Scott MacArthur, Bryan Greenberg, and Myles Bullockas guest stars. And Staples is very proud of the troupe he assembled for the show. 

“When doing something this nuanced, playing straight within a non-traditional comedy, you need real talent, you need these moments to stick out, and we were able to find a diverse array of people to work on the show and they all did great,” he says. “I think we had great contrast with our characters and it ended up being a perfect storm of people. It really made my job easy.”

Yes, you can get your first look at the series through the teaser trailer above, which shows snippets of Staples trying to get bailed out of jail; beefing with an amusement park mascot who has a staring problem; and getting shot at by a mystery man. Hawkeyed viewers might also spot rapper Rick Ross. As the preview sums up: All of this is “just another day in the life” of Vince Staples.

Where was The Vince Staples Show filmed?

The Vince Staples Show was shot throughout Long Beach, which was an important detail for Staples because he wanted the series to feel authentic. “When you’re playing off of this hypersurreal type of environment, you have to have certain connection points that make people think, ‘Oh, is this real, is this not real?,’ ” he says. “We tried to tie things to true locations we know and love. There’s a lot of underlying things in shots. We have a lot of Easter eggs there, a lot of untold stories, a lot of things that are intentionally tucked in the back.”

The show is executive produced by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, Ian Edelman, Maurice Williams, Corey Smyth, and William Stefan Smith. Edelman and Williams co-created the series with Staples.
