Emmett Lewis What about you would your ancestors be most proud of? The fact that I kept listening. And the fact that I am still holding onto as much of the tradition that they was able to pass down to me through their DNA.

I try to instill the same things in my children so that our legacy will continue. So far, they’ve made me very proud.What changes do you hope to see or create for your descendants? Better opportunities. And once [you have them], make sure [you] take full advantage of them, because nothing is going to be handed to you. You have to take the initiative.

Donn Thompson Morelli What about you would your ancestors be most proud of? My innovative spirit and also my desire to amplify their message — one of perseverance and courage — in the world. As a singer-songwriter, as a recording artist, as a writer, I try to bring messages of healing and tenacity into the world as a Black woman. But [having] recently learned that I am a descendant, I feel that I’ve been entrusted to exemplify hope.

I think that I did something for somebody else in this world, other than myself.What changes do you hope to see or create for your descendants?  I have no children, but I think I’d like to continue to work to keep this legacy alive.

Joe Womack What about you would your ancestors be most proud of? That I’m involved in helping the community stay around. There are a lot of people that didn’t wanna lose their land. And I’m helping save the community.What changes do you hope to see or create for your descendants? The sustainability of the community. The ability for city officials and businesspeople to talk to the community on the same level, and listen to us about our desires for the future.

In 2022, we still have a lot to overcome, so I hope to create where they don’t have to, and that they’ll be able to do whatever they want to do, without any restrictions.
