[CLIP] Michael Beach (as Chief Dan Carter): Is there something that you want to tell me?
[TITLE CARD] THE PERFECT COUPLE: BEHIND THE CHARACTERS
[suspenseful string music playing]
[camera shutter clicks]
Billy Howle: They're planning the wedding of the century.
Michael Beach: The night before the wedding,
Billy Howle: A close friend of the family is found dead on the beach.
Dakota Fanning: And it sort of throws everything into a spiral and exposes secrets and lies. It's a stereotypical Nantucket family with this matriarch, played by Nicole Kidman, and Liev Schreiber, her husband.
[CLIP] Man: Words of wisdom for the bride and groom?
[CLIP] Nicole Kidman (as Greer Garrison Winbury): Oh, come on. Yes. Yes.
[CLIP] Liev Schreiber (as Tag Winbury): Uh, if you are half as lucky as your mother and I have been, you will have a very long and a very, very happy marriage. Cheers.
Nicole Kidman: I loved that she's acerbic and she's funny and she's mysterious. She's terrifying, and a mama bear. And she's glamorous. And she's surprising.
Liev Schreiber: I play Tag Winbury. He's the patriarch. He carries the family name. Which, in these sorts of families, is a pivotal person. [chuckling] I really only need one word for Tag, "damaged." But love's love. He's kind of modern-day… Fellini-esque.
[CLIP] Billy Howle (as Benji Winbury): She is different from you guys, right? But she cares what you think. She just doesn't place value on the same things that you do.
Billy Howle: Benji is initially wanting to rile against and rebel against his family unit. Bringing Amelia into that family dynamic is a slightly larger and more noticeable act of rebellion.
[CLIP] Eve Hewson (as Amelia Sacks): I love him, and you know I do.
[CLIP] Meghann Fahy (as Merrit Monaco): I know you do.
[CLIP] Eve Hewson (as Amelia Sacks): But shouldn't I be, like… addicted?
Eve Hewson: Benji and Amelia have a very interesting relationship. You can be in love with someone and not feel like they're the right life person for you. She has sort of the picture-perfect story laid out right in front of her, and yet, she doesn't feel entirely connected to it.
[CLIP] Sam Nivola (as Will Winbury): I don't buy it for a second, actually. **** you especially.
Sam Nivola: Will has grown up thinking of himself as the most powerful person in any room because his family has so much influence and money. He's still in the phase of, like, what the **** is happening with this weird family?
[CLIP] Dakota Fanning (as Abby Winbury): If they have a problem with me packing up her things, they can arrest me. But they won't because I'm a white woman.
Dakota Fanning: I would describe Abby in three words. "Pregnant," which she loves to tell everyone all the time. "Secretive." And "conniving." [laughs] We meet Abby when she's already married into the Winbury family. She's married to Thomas, one of Greer and Tag's sons. Abby's trying to be the perfect daughter-in-law, the perfect wife, the soon-to-be perfect mother.
[CLIP] Jack Reynor (as Thomas Winbury): We all know she loves your money.
[CLIP] Ishaan Khatter (as Shooter Dival): Hey, Tom, shut up.
[CLIP] Jack Reynor (as Thomas Winbury): What? They're all in it for the money.
Jack Reynor: I think he's the one character in the show where what everybody is thinking, he's gonna be the first person to say it. And it doesn't matter who that hurts or who is impacted by that. Obviously, he's grown up in extraordinary privilege, and that's created just a very spoiled, entitled individual.
Meghann Fahy: Three words I would use to describe Merritt are "fun," "loving," and "dead." [laughs] I prepared by floating face down in a lot of different pools because I knew I was gonna have to do that in the ocean. [laughs]
[CLIP] Michael Beach (as Chief Dan Carter): What's up, Carl?
[CLIP] Man (on phone): We got a floater.
Michael Beach: I, as the chief, I come in. And through the early investigation, we realize she didn't die. She was murdered. And so it's really about trying to find out who the murderer is. We had almost everyone in the interrogation seat.
[CLIP] Michael Beach (as Chief Dan Carter): Chloe?
[CLIP] Mia Isaac (as Chloe Carter): Hey, Dad. Don't freak out, okay? It's okay.
Mia Isaac: Chloe being the chief of police's daughter just makes things more complicated. She's always had a crush on Will. She worked for the Winbury family for a while. She really knows a lot about them. I think she's kind of torn between where her loyalties lie.
[CLIP] Ishaan Khatter (as Shooter Dival): Hey. I really need to talk to you. Just, uh, call me back, please.
Ishaan Khatter: Shooter is intriguing and mysterious. There's enough Winburys in that family. But here's this kid who is an outsider, but has been welcomed into this family. And he feels a sense of, I think, kinship and responsibility towards them, but is also able to see them from the outside. So he holds a very interesting perspective of the whole thing.
[CLIP] Liev Schrieber (as Tag Winbury): I'm Tag Winbury. This is my home.
[CLIP] Donna Lynne Champlin (as Detective Nikki Henry): I'm Detective Nikki Henry. This is my job.
Donna Lynne Champlin: What's really cool about Nikki is that she's a complete outsider. Every single character, including Dan, who's the local police there, they all have emotional connections, political connections. But that's her advantage, is that she's a complete outsider. And she doesn't give a **** about anyone or anything. She just wants to solve the mystery and then go back to her kids.
[CLIP] Donna Lynne Champlin (as Detective Nikki Henry): I did not see that coming.
[CLIP] Michael Beach (as Chief Dan Carter): Neither did I.
[CLIP] Donna Lynne Champlin (as Detective Nikki Henry): Nope.
