[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): And you expect him to just give you Norway?

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): And what would you rather do? 

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): What is wrong with raising children in a place where they’ll know peace instead of war? 

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): Because my children are meant to be rulers of Norway, not hide in its wilderness! 

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): Your children? 

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): Our children. [suspenseful music playing] [groans] 

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): Where is he? Where is Olaf? [gasps] 

[CLIP] Man: Taken by Forkbeard.

Leo Suter: In Season 2, we learn that Olaf is indebted to Forkbeard to keep his son alive. 

[CLIP] Man: People of Kattegat. I’ve called you here to declare that my grandson, Svein Knutsson, will be the new King of Norway!

[CLIP] [crowd clamoring] 

[CLIP] Man: I have placed Jarl Olaf Haraldsson as the king’s protector. 

[CLIP] Man 2: Kattegat is in danger from an old ally. My brother, Harald Sigurdsson.

[CLIP] Man 3: Assemble the men. Are you ready for your first lesson? Good. I promise it will be one you will not forget.

[CLIP] [horn blows] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): Olaf has placed a price on your head and Freydís’. 

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): The trio meet Jorundr and accept his help as Olaf closes in on them. 

[CLIP] Man: We have found them. Quickly. Quickly. Run. Run. [tense music playing]

[CLIP] Man 2:  Kill them all! [indistinct shouting] 

[CLIP] Man 3: Retreat! Retreat! No!

Frida Gustavsson: Season 2 expanded the Viking world and saw even more challenges and conflict for our characters.

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): I am with child.

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): Does Harald know? 

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): No. And you must promise me not to tell him. Because I cannot have a child that one day would be the ruler of a Christian nation.

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson: Freydís decides to go to Jomsborg under the promise of a new Uppsala. 

[CLIP] Man: Freydís, welcome to Jomsborg.

Sam Corlett: Harald and Leif head to Novgorod. 

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): My uncle Yaroslav is the ruler.

Sam Corlett: When they arrive, Yaroslav refuses Harald’s request for an army.

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): I will sit on the throne of Norway.

[suspenseful music playing] 

[CLIP] Man: As I see it, beloved nephew, you have two choices. Return to Kattegat and swear fealty to Olaf, or do what Vikings have always done. Reinvent themselves.

Sam Corlett: In Novgorod, Leif struggles with the grief of losing his lover, Liv.

[thunder crashes]

[CLIP] Woman: Leif, come to Valhalla. Come with me.

Sam Corlett: Mariam, a scholar, rescues him from a near-death experience.

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): We heard stories when we were younger. 

[CLIP] Woman: Many believe it a bad omen. People are always afraid of things they don’t understand.

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): The stakes are higher than ever. I have a new plan.

Leo Suter: A wealthy trader tells Harald he’ll give him money for an army. 

[CLIP] Man: I must transport something of great worth to the emperor in Constantinople. I will pay you handsomely. 

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): Fortune favors the bold.

Sam Corlett: Harald and Leif assemble a crew to set off on a dangerous expedition.

[CLIP] Man: A prince, a slaver, a blind Pecheneg, a woman scholar, two con men, and a noble, on a boat on a sled. What could go wrong?

[intense music playing]

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): On the journey, Mariam introduces Leif to science and astronomy. 

[CLIP] Woman: When you understand mathematics, you learn the secret to the world.

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): Can you teach me all this?

[CLIP] Woman: It will take years. 

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): I am a willing student. 

[CLIP] Woman: Learning is about a constant movement of ideas.

[CLIP] [ice cracking]

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): It’s coming. Brace yourselves!

Sam Corlett: To Leif, this season is about moral and intellectual growth, which challenges his faith.

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): In England, there are ongoing struggles for power. 

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): Until Canute returns and I obtain his blessing, we keep these visits a secret from the queen.

Leo Suter: Earl Godwin saves Queen Emma from an assassin. 

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): Don’t touch the host, Your Highness. It’s poisoned. 

[CLIP] Man: Guards, stop him!

[CLIP] Leo Suter: Queen Emma then becomes suspicious of her lady-in-waiting. 

[CLIP] Woman: Lady Aelfwynn’s brother was the man who tried to kill me. I believe it is you who was behind it. 

[CLIP] Man: Had I wanted you dead, would I not have allowed it to happen? 

[CLIP] Woman: That is exactly the question I’ve not been able to answer.

Leo Suter: Emma’s investigation led her to find out that Godwin asked the man known as the Bear for help. 

[CLIP] Woman 1: We are going to find him. 

[CLIP] Woman 2: The Bear was always loyal to him. 

[CLIP] Woman 1: The Bear knew Godwin?

[CLIP] Woman 2: He was Godwin’s guardian.

Frida Gustavsson: On Canute’s return, Emma confides in him her suspicions about Godwin, which Canute dismisses. 

[CLIP] Man: Godwin is a complex man who has endured great losses and found a way to survive. 

[CLIP] Man: You should become part of my family.

Frida Gustavsson: Canute makes arrangements for Godwin to marry his niece, Gytha, which ensures that their future son can be part of the royal bloodline. 

[CLIP] Woman: Aelfwynn said it was Godwin’s dream to have a son who would be king. She could not. But I can.

Frida Gustavsson: In Jomsborg, Freydís must become the defender of the old ways.

[CLIP] Man: Where is everyone? 

[CLIP] Woman: You must not be angry. The people were anxious for your safety. They turned to Freydís, and she took them to the woods where the refugees pray.

Frida Gustavsson: Freydís soon learns that Harekr’s intentions are darker than they seem. 

[CLIP] Man: Perhaps here, not Kattegat, is the real test of your calling.

Leo Suter: Along the way to Constantinople, Harald’s faith in himself is wavering, and he’s a long way from home.

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): Hold on! [breathing deeply]

[CLIP] [men shouting]

Frida Gustavsson: Freydís is asked to become the spiritual leader of the Jomsvikings.

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): This is our new Uppsala! [cheering]

Frida Gustavsson: Harekr is angered when he sees the Jomsvikings mixing with the refugees. 

[CLIP] Man: They are a filthy mix of Norse tribes, not like us. We are the superior people.

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): Run! 

[CLIP] [people screaming]

[CLIP] Man: Lock her up. 

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): Freydís is carrying your child. But she made me promise not to tell you.

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): It’s my child. 

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): And she is my sister. 

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): You waited till I could not go back there to tell me. 

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): Because you would have, future King of Norway, and that would not have helped you.

[CLIP] [screaming]

Frida Gustavsson: Freydís gives birth to her son, who she names Harald. 

[CLIP] Man: The son of the chosen one!

[people cheer] 

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eriksdotter): You have taken my son, and I want him back!

[crowd clamoring]

[tense music swells]

[music fades]

Sam Corlett: As they continue to make their way to Constantinople, these hardships bond the crew of misfits together, including encountering fearsome Pechenegs.

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson) I’m going to find Harald.

Sam Corlett: There’s a Butch Cassidy and Sundance kind of vibe between Harald and Leif. 

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): This is where you thank me for coming. 

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada) This is where I ask if you have another plan.

[CLIP] [groans]

[CLIP] [clamoring]

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): Mariam ultimately dies, leaving her home to Leif.

[CLIP] Woman: There is much inside. It will help you on your journey.

[epic music playing] 

[CLIP] Man: Get ready!

Frida Gustavsson: Tension between Christian and pagan Vikings come to a head when Freydís faces Olaf. 

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): It is not every day they get to see the great Olaf Haraldsson beaten by a woman. No!

[both grunting]

[CLIP] [Freydís grunts] 

[CLIP] Man: You’ve made me a martyr. 

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): But who is left to tell your story?

[energetic music playing]

Sam Corlett: Harald and Elena start a romance. But he soon learns that she’s been keeping a secret from him.

[CLIP] Woman: You helped deliver my father’s treasure. And it is so prized by the emperor that he will reward you beyond your wildest dreams. 

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): Then why are you not in a hurry to deliver it? 

[CLIP] Woman: Because I’m not sure what will happen afterwards.

[CLIP] [tender music playing] Woman: Svein!

Frida Gustavsson: Freydís returns Svein to Queen Aelfgifu, regent of Kattegat. 

[CLIP] Woman: You must be Freydís. 

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir):I have returned your son when I did not need to. 

[CLIP] Woman: What do you require for this act of kindness? 

[CLIP] Frida Gustavsson (as Freydís Eiríksdóttir): Peace. 

Woman: You have my word.

Sam Corlett: Harald learns at the end of their voyage that Eleana is the most powerful woman in the Byzantine Empire. This will have important consequences for Harald in Season 3.

[CLIP] Man: You did not know what it was you were delivering. 

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): I thought it was the medallion.

[CLIP] Man: No. The new empress of Constantinople. [epic music swells] 

Sam Corlett: Season 3 sprawls beyond the known world of Vikings: Valhalla.

[CLIP] Sam Corlett (as Leif Eriksson): We’re in search of a ship and crew to sail west to find a land I believe is out there. 

Sam Corlett: Seeing these pieces of the puzzle coming together, that’s really cool. And a powerful end to the show. 

[CLIP] Man: Welcome to Greenland!

Frida Gustavsson: They have really taken on the world, and it’s a place where those destinies and those wishes that we had in Season 1 may have been fulfilled.

[CLIP] Leo Suter (as Harald Hardrada): I remind the jarls of a promise they made. To crown me as king. And I dare any Viking to challenge me!
