It all begins with some teenage fury and a flourish of fire. One minute, 16-year-old Bloom Peters (Abigail Cowen) is aggravated with her mother, and in the next, her childhood home goes up in flames, unleashed by Bloom’s untapped fire magic and uncontrolled emotions. Shortly thereafter, Bloom discovers the Otherworld and an elite school, Alfea College, located in the realm of Solaria, where she learns more about her magical abilities, heritage and some ancient evils.
Whisked away from the only life she’s ever known by Alfea College headmistress Farah Dowling (Eve Best), Bloom strikes up several friendships. Her roommate Aisha (Precious Mustapha), is a no-nonsense water fairy who loves to swim. Bloom's suitemates are Terra (Eliot Salt), Musa (Elisha Applebaum) and Stella (Hannah van der Westhuysen). Terra is an earth fairy, trying desperately to fit in. Musa is a mind fairy determined to shut everyone else out. And finally there’s Stella, a light fairy who’s trying to live up to her mother's expectations.

Stella, who happens to be the Princess of Solaria, isn’t exactly welcoming at first, especially since Bloom catches the eye of her ex-boyfriend, Sky (Danny Griffin). Despite that, all of the Winx suite girls band together to learn more about Bloom’s hidden past, the mysterious Rosalind (Lesley Sharp in Season 1 and Miranda Richardson in Season 2) and how to kill the menacing Burned Ones.
Ahead of the Season 2 premiere of Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2 on Sept.16, we’re breaking down everything you need to remember about the Otherworld from A to Z.

Located in the magical realm of Solaria, Alfea College is one of the most elite schools in the Otherworld. The college recruits and trains fairies and specialists. After Bloom accidentally set fire to her home, Miss Dowling, the school’s headmistress, found her in the First World. While attending Alfea, Bloom encounters other fairies for the first time. She also learns to control her emotions, enabling her to control her fire magic. Bloom arrives at Alfea, desperately searching for answers about her past. She also feels very behind. The fairies and specialists attending Alfea have honed their abilities for years. In Season 1, most of the action occurs at Alfea College or on the campus grounds.

Before Bloom arrived at Alfea, Burned Ones hadn’t been seen in the magical realms for 16 years. However, upon her arrival, the evil creatures begin popping up everywhere. The human-like figures move at lightning-fast speed. They also have massive claws that allow them to swipe at their prey, killing them outright or infecting them. In Season 1, specialist instructor Saul Silva (Robert James-Collier) and Terra’s brother Sam (Jacob Dudman) are infected by Burned Ones. The infection can be contained for a short time. However, the only way to fully heal and survive is by killing the creature responsible for the infection. Killing a Burned One involves their magical core being incinerated. Interestingly enough, Burned Ones are drawn toward Bloom, and she can feel them when they are near.

When Bloom first meets Aisha, she shares her past with her new roommate. Aisha quickly realizes that Bloom is a changeling. The term refers to a fairy baby switched with a human baby at birth. It’s a rare and barbaric practice. It is usually done at the hands of angry fairies who want to wreak havoc on the First World. Since they know nothing about their magical powers, changelings can be very dangerous. In Season 1, Bloom learns that Rosalind, the former headmistress of Alfea, removed her from the Otherworld and left her in the First World. However, the rest of her past remains a mystery.

More than just a changeling, Bloom is a unique fire fairy. In Season 1, Rosalind reveals to Bloom that an ancient, powerful source of magic called Dragon Flame burns within her. We also learn that Dragon Flame is what made the Burned Ones, which is why they are drawn to Bloom. Burned Ones were once human soldiers transformed into their vengeful scorched form by Dragon Flame. Many details about Bloom’s magical powers have not yet been revealed, but we feel that it has much to do with why Rosalind left her in the First World.

Though the name might not suggest it, earth fairies are some of the most complex fairies in the magical realm. Terra can grow, bend and manipulate plants at her whim. She shares that ability with her earth fairy cousin, Flora (Paulina Chávez), who loves to dabble in flowers. However, for Sam, Terra’s brother, being an earth fairy means something different. Sam can walk through walls since he can manipulate the essence of the earth. Likewise, the siblings’ father, Professor Ben Harvey (Alex Macqueen in Season 1 and Daniel Betts in Season 2), can change the state of the earth, shifting solid ground into quicksand.

Though they don’t look much different from humans, fairies are magical creatures who use one of six elements of magic to fuel their powers. Those elements are earth, air, fire, light, the mind and water. Though fairies specializing in a particular element share similarities, they also have differences. Also, when they use their powers, a fairy’s eyes change colors. When putting their abilities on display, fairies must tap into their emotions. However, they must be careful not to fuel off negative emotions, which could cause catastrophic issues. Fairies can also combine their magic, but not many know this.

When Bloom first arrives at Alfea, her parents believe she’s attending a ritzy boarding school in Switzerland. Instead of jumping on a plane and hopping time zones, Bloom passes through the Gateway. The Gateway is the path between the human world and the Otherworld. In Season 1, Stella lends Bloom her Gateway Ring, one of the crown jewels of Solaria. However, to use the ring, Bloom has to pass through the barrier surrounding Alfea College. The first time she uses Stella’s Gateway Ring, Bloom encounters a Burned One and loses the heirloom. She and the rest of the girls have to go on a harrowing journey to retrieve it.

Bloom’s parents are humans, raising her in the First World. Their biological baby, who was born with a heart defect, was switched with Bloom at birth without their knowledge. Rosalind knew that Bloom possessed the Dragon Flame, even as a baby, so she sent her to the human world where she could grow up hidden, and her secret would remain protected. Initially, Bloom keeps her magical abilities a secret from her parents. However, she tells them the truth at the end of Season 1.

Getting cut by a Burned One either leads to death or an infection that will eventually kill the infected. Though the infection can be slowed down, it must be stopped before it gets to the heart of a fairy or a specialist. Getting infected is painful and the infected becomes increasingly monstrous. The Burned One that caused the injury must be hunted down and killed to get rid of the infection and evade death.

Though many of Rosalind’s tactics are barbaric, she justifies them by saying they’re for the greater good of fairies. In the past, Rosalind’s missions and teachings began to alarm Silva, Dowling and Harvey so much that they no longer became justifiable. After all, anything can be explained away, but that doesn’t mean that it’s right.

The Fate: The Winx Saga pilot opens with a Burned One attacking an innocent farmer. At first, the citizens of the Otherworld believe that the creature is acting alone. Until that point, Burned Ones hadn’t been seen for 16 years. However, as Season 1 unfurls, it becomes clear that there are many more Burned Ones, just like in the past. Back in the day, Silva, along with Sky’s father, Andreas of Eraklyon (Ken Duken), worked in an army of specialists who haunted Burned Ones. Andreas even kept a kill count of the Burned Ones he’d obliterated.

Stella is a light fairy; at first, her abilities seem pretty straightforward. She can create balls of light that are either mobile or stationary. During Season 1, we also see her protecting herself and her friends using blasts of light during attacks. However, the Princess of Solaria’s capabilities stretch beyond anything Tinker Bell can do. Stella has learned to manipulate the light around her, allowing her to appear invisible. Stella often uses her invisibility to escape the expectations of the world around her.

Unlike her friends and classmates, Musa’s abilities as a mind fairy can’t be switched on and off. Musa’s magic makes her a hyper-empath; she can feel and read other people’s emotions by being near them. By the end of Season 1, she learns how to draw off the feelings of others, even taking away Sam’s pain when he’s infected by a Burned One. However, mind fairies’ abilities can go even further than this. Miss Dowling is also a mind fairy, and she uses her mind magic to get into Beatrix’s (Sadie Soverall) head. For now, Musa is still trying to figure out how to be around others without overloading herself with their feelings and emotions.

Silva, Dowling and Professor Harvey find Nettle Amalgam in Callum’s (Harry Michell) desk. Since Dowling’s assistant is human, it’s clear that he had help with the Nettle Amalgam, which is ancient fairy knowledge. We know that Beatrix aided Callum and that Beatrix got her knowledge from Rosalind. We feel this isn’t the last we’ve heard of the Nettle Amalgam. After all, Rosalind has more than a few tricks up her sleeve.

The Otherworld is the magical world where fairies and specialists live. This world is separate from the First World, where humans live. A gateway must be used to pass between the worlds. The Otherworld is split into seven realms, including Solaria, Eraklyon and Linphea. Alfea College is located in Solaria. This particular realm is ruled by Queen Luna (Kate Fleetwood), and it appears to be the most affluent of the Otherworld.

After seeing Rosalind in a vision, Bloom questions Miss Dowling about the former Alfea headmistress. Dowling lies to the fire fairy, telling her that Rosalind has died. However, Beatrix shows Bloom that this isn’t the case. Since the incident at Aster Dell, Dowling has kept Rosalind imprisoned in stasis under Alfea College behind a barrier. Though Rosalind had been in the stasis prison for nearly 20 years, she could still use her mind to connect with others, sharing visions and memories. Despite Dowling’s warning about how dangerous Rosalind is, Bloom thinks the former headmistress is the key to her past.

The Queen of Solaria also happens to be Stella’s mother. She always projects strength, never weakness, which is something she also forces Stella to do. While Stella can bend light to make herself appear invisible, Queen Luna’s powers are even more intense. She can target individual people by creating fake worlds and submerging them in torturous situations that she creates. Stella is terrified of her mother, so Queen Luna is probably capable of many more evil things.

A former headmistress of Alfea College, Rosalind led the crusade against the Burned Ones 16 years ago. However, she was dishonest with Silva, Dowling and Harvey during the attack on Aster Dell. Though Burned Ones had descended on the town, its residents had not been evacuated before she gave orders to destroy it. Rosalind is the most powerful and respected fairy in Alfea, and she has several fairy abilities. Rosalind is also a purist. She doesn’t believe anyone outside of fairies should do magic. Moreover, she pushes students to let their emotions spiral so that they can tap into their most potent magic. It’s bound to cause some dire consequences.

If you thought Burned Ones were terrifying, you’re not ready for Season 2’s scrapers. There isn’t much known about these creatures yet, but we know they’re nasty buglike things with an octopus-type appearance. They appear to put fairies in grave danger, but we’re not sure why or how. We’re sure more will come to light in Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2.

Though she doesn’t have control over her magic when she first arrives at Alfea, Bloom begins to control her emotions and tap into more power than she ever thought possible. She transforms at the end of Fate: The Winx Saga Season 1. Fairies have adapted and appeared like humans for generations. However, in tapping into her Dragon Flame, Bloom unlocks ancient fairy magic enabling her to transform into a winged fire fairy, defeating the Burned Ones who attacked the school.

An unguent is a type of potionlike oil. Terra and her father, Professor Harvey, are skilled at making them since they are earth fairies and understand the complexities of herbs and plants. An unguent is used when slowing down an infection from a Burned One.

A vessel is used at Stone Circle, located on the grounds of Alfea College. The vessel tests a fairy’s ability to channel the magical element they were born with. Vessel stones read magic. Fairy magic is amplified at Stone Circle because it’s a sacred space.
Like in most magical places, the Otherworld has witches, but the Blood Witches take evil to a new level. Blood Witches manipulate blood; therefore, they can control muscles and bones. They could control people’s bodies from miles away at the height of their power. Though their magic doesn’t work on fairies, Blood Witches have been known to steal fairy magic.

Though the tactic is known to be unsafe, Rosalind pushes fairies to use their emotions to the extreme, forcing them to use a heightened level of power. The issue is that once a fairy allows their ability to get beyond their control, they have a great chance of hurting themselves and others. Before Bloom arrived at Alfea, she accidentally set her house aflame following an argument with her mother. As a result, her mom sustained third-degree burns.
The creator and showrunner of Fate: The Winx Saga, Young was a writer on seven seasons of the hit teen drama The Vampire Diaries. Since Fate is based on a children’s anime, Young knew he had to reimagine the characters in a live-action series for a more mature audience. “It’s a fantasy that I think a lot of people have when they’re that age because you’re just trying to find somewhere where you don’t feel so alone and so different,” he told The Guardian.

If you have the misfortune of being infected by a Burned One, an unguent made from zanbaq flowers can be administered to help manage the symptoms. Though it’ll slow down the infection rate, it won’t completely stop the painful black web from spreading across your body. If the Burned One who caused the infection isn’t killed before it spreads to your heart, you’ll die.
