Geppetto would be proud: Guillermo del Toro made history on Tuesday as the first Latino to win the best animated feature Golden Globe for Pinocchio.
“Animation is cinema,” del Toro said in his emotional acceptance speech. “Animation is not a genre for kids. It’s a medium.” It’s a message del Toro has been driving home repeatedly as he hits the campaign trail for Pinocchio. The movie is the filmmaker’s first animated project.

Pinocchio also made history in another way: the story of the little puppet that could marks the first time the Golden Globes’ animated feature award has gone to a streaming service like Netflix. The painstakingly crafted stop-motion story took nearly two full years to shoot, but it was worth it. Del Toro’s film is an emotional triumph that turns the story of Pinocchio on its head in a satisfying and radical way.
Other Netflix wins at the 2023 Golden Globes included two acting awards, for Julia Garner’s performance in the final season of Ozark and Evan Peters’ portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer in DAHMER — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Ryan Murphy, the prolific creator of The Watcher, DAHMER and many more, also accepted the show’s Carol Burnett TV Achievement Award.
