For more than four centuries, golf has been a sport characterized by class and grace. And then came Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler). It’s been almost 30 years since we last saw him. Now the hockey player turned golfer who can hit it over the highway is back.

Since kicking Shooter McGavin’s (Christopher McDonald) ass, winning grandma’s house back, and getting his gold jacket, Happy’s had a pretty fruitful three decades. A gaggle of kids and a loving wife. A record-breaking career. A bust in the World Golf Hall of Fame. You name it.

Around the turn of the millennium, he almost had his own video game, too. Some thought the game, never released to the public, was just an urban legend. But it turns out it wasn’t lost to the sands of time. It just took Netflix to unearth Happy Gilmore: Golf Mayhem ’98 Demo and give it to the world.

What’s the Happy Gilmore game about?

Take everything you know about golf video games and throw it directly into the garbage. Happy Gilmore: Golf Mayhem ’98 Demo mirrors key events from Happy’s first cinematic outing, putting you on the links as the Subway Kid himself.

Rescuing your sweet grandma from the clutches of a nefarious retirement home worker isn’t on the table this time, so the stakes are a little lower. That doesn’t make knocking out hecklers any less fun. Serve them a nice warm glass of shut the hell up with your fists.

Ultimately your job is to send the ball home — his bags are packed and he’s ready to go. How you get to the green, and what your score looks like once you do, is anybody’s guess.

What kind of game is Happy Gilmore: Golf Mayhem ’98 Demo?

You play as Happy, the hockey player turned golf savant who can smash a ball 400+ yards in a single swing. Happy isn’t your typical golfer, so why would you think his video game would be any different? In his version of golf, the course is a lawless place.

It’s unlike any other time you’ve hit the virtual links. Tee off with classic golf game mechanics, and then take off in your cart to raise a ruckus on this free-roam fairway.

There’s more to this turn-of-the century time capsule than just mastering the swing meter. You’ll still do that, of course, but you’ll face bosses like legendary Let’s Make a Deal host Bob Barker in mortal combat too. Yes, really.

Golf, as in hockey, works best if you fear no one. Especially not the one-eyed alligator hanging out in a water hazard. Fight him — it’s what Chubbs (Carl Weathers) would’ve wanted. Maybe you’ll display some amazingly bizarre behavior of your own, and ride your hockey stick like a bull. Or do something wholesome for once, and rescue a cat stuck in a tree.

Regardless of what you eat for breakfast, you’ll need to master your short game if you want to make your way up the leaderboard. It’s the only way you’ll pick up any trophies of your own. Use your shoulders to push the ball. Don’t break the wrist. Just taaap it in, nice and easy. Give it a little tappy, a tap-tap tap-a-roo.

  • Potter (Kevin Nealon): “Feel the flow, Happy, feel it. It’s circular. It’s like a carousel.”
  • Sandy Wexler (Adam Sandler): When you think about it, Wexler’s cameo makes perfect sense. He’s a talent agent, and Happy rubs elbows with practically everybody during his ascent.
