Shadow and Bone Season 2 introduces audiences to a little ship called Wesper: the charming pair consists of devil-may-care gunslinger Jesper Fahey (Kit Young) and shy demolition expert Wylan Hendricks (Jack Wolfe). Wesper is here to take you on a tour of a very different ship — the VolkvolnySturmhond’s (Patrick Gibson) pirate vessel, along with more of the Shadow and Bone set.

In an exclusive video, Young and Wolfe explore the Season 2 set, which is located in Budapest, Hungary. They start out on the Volkvolny, whose name translates to “Wolf of the Sea.” At one point, Young attempts to hop into one of the ship’s hammocks… and it doesn’t go well. “I’m not a born pirate. So, I can’t do this,” he says into the camera, as his co-star laughs. Wolfe, on the other hand, plays it safe, easily slipping into a bottom bunk.

“As you can tell, we’ve never been here before,” Young says. After all, Jesper, Wylan and the rest of the Crows much prefer the clubs and gambling dens of Ketterdam to a “loft apartment”-sized boat. Both enjoy the exploration, though, as Wolfe finds one special clothing item he just might pilfer. Maybe the pirate life fits, after all.

For the rest of the video, the duo traipse through the “spooky” set that is Morozova’s workshop, which appears in Episode 6. Wolfe reveals that specific designs related to Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels were hand-drawn onto the walls of the workshop. Both actors are awed by the detail on display, from intricate scribblings and notes to surprisingly lengthy scrolls.

While the clip definitely boasts new insights into Season 2, it’s also just another shining example of Jesper and Wylan’s undeniable chemistry. Both performers were excited for fans to see this new relationship.

When Wolfe joined Shadow and Bone, the producers asked him what he would’ve liked to have seen as a young queer person from a fantasy show, he tells Tudum. The results of those conversations are in Season 2.

“For Wylan and Jesper, a lot of their romance is super playful and really safe. It never feels gratuitous,” Wolfe says. “It’s something I never see very often. So that really matters to me, especially since their first intimate [on-screen] moment ends in just a pile of giggles.”

Although Wolfe sometimes misses the “slow burn” that characterizes the Wesper relationship in the Six of Crows books that are part of the inspiration for Shadow and Bone, he’s glad fans don’t have to wait for this love story — it’s already on-screen for them to enjoy. In this version of the romance, Jesper and Wylan have already had a previous dalliance, whether they both immediately remember it or not.

Wolfe, a musician, even brought a little of himself into the couple’s courtship. He composed the small piano number Wylan plays for Jesper during their mission to the countryside in Episode 3.

Young is so proud of his on-screen relationship, he’s not afraid to brag. “The relationship is a really healthy one. No shade on all the other ships out there, but this is the least complicated,” he playfully says. “They don’t want to kill each other. They’re able to make a lot of physical contact.”

The first time Young saw Wolfe walk into an audition, he thought to himself, “Oh, this is going to be cake.” And, as sure as the Volkvolny sails the True Sea, he was right.
