Get ready for another newcomer to the Shondaland Television Universe.
After the success of the hit period drama Bridgerton and scammer origin story Inventing Anna, producer Shonda Rhimes’s Netflix domination continues with The Residence, a screwball White House murder mystery.
The synopsis reads: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world's most famous mansion.” The Residence will be the juiciest version White House with a classic Shonda style twist (read: murder).
The eight episode series is inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s 2015 nonfiction book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, which delves into the nitty gritty of America’s first families–from the Kennedys and Reagans to the Clintons and Obamas–all from the point of view of their staffers.
Scandal and For the People alum Paul William Davies is the series showrunner and executive producer, along with Rhimes and Betsy Beers. The Residence is a continuation of Rhimes’s overall deal with Netflix which was announced in 2018. Between this news and Bridgerton season 2 premiering at the end of the month, we’re breaking out the Olivia Pope wine glasses.
