Rebelde wouldn’t be Rebelde without paying due respect to the true stars of the show: the Elite Way School (EWS) uniforms.
The red blazers of the EWS uniform were central to the original Rebelde series that aired from 2004 - 2006 and helped define a generation of teenage fans in Mexico. These outfits were so iconic that the EWS administration even honored the hitmaking pop group, RBD (formed by students Mía Colucci, Roberta Pardo, Miguel Arango, Diego Bustamante, Guadalupe “Lupita” Fernández and Giovanni Mendez), by hanging their uniforms up in a display case in the school hallway.
New student Luka Colucci may call the homage “tacky” in the Netflix reboot, but there’s obviously a sense of awe and jealousy at play here. Claro, it’s a lot of pressure to live up to his cousin Mía’s reputation.
Despite his indignation on the surface, Luka and the rest of the new class of students know just how big a deal it is to don the classic EWS garb — and to take on the legacy it represents. Dixon’s reaction to seeing the uniforms in his dorm closet is priceless.
