If the Sweet Magnolias were “seizing their passions” in Season 4, then Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) are chasing their dreams in Season 5, premiering June 11.
In fact, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson tells Tudum that “chasing your dreams” became the guiding theme of the upcoming season, as Serenity’s favorite trio follows those dreams all the way to New York City to visit Maddie at her new publishing job. “We wanted to give everybody that thrilling New York adventure,” Anderson says.

One of Anderson’s favorite places to visit in Manhattan is the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park, which inspired part of the season’s emotional framework. As Anderson mapped out Season 5 in the writers room, the Magnolias’ journeys began to resemble their own rabbit holes, full of reinvention, uncertainty, and unexpected turns.
“In everybody chasing their dreams, somebody’s catching them, some people are finding they were changed, and some people are just stumbling,” says Anderson. “We like having the three ladies in different places every season.”
In the trailer, Maddie shows Helen and Dana Sue how she’s made her New York dream a reality. But while the city represents a dream come true, it also means spending more time away from her husband, Cal (Justin Bruening), and her children back home in Serenity.
Helen and Dana Sue’s “love and support helps me balance the hurt of being away from all the people that I love,” Maddie says.

Meanwhile, Helen is finally preparing to marry Erik (Dion Johnstone), after four seasons of anticipation. Anderson is thankful longtime viewers have been on the journey with the characters and will get to “enjoy the fruits of your labor” in Season 5.
At the end of Season 4, chef Dana Sue begins pursuing her dream of developing her own teaching kitchen. But in Season 5, she begins to wonder whether her dreams still align with those of her husband Ronnie (Brandon Quinn), especially as they try to make the most of their last summer with their daughter Annie (Anneliese Judge) before she leaves for college. “Our marriage is like a balloon,” she says in the trailer. “And I’m afraid it’s about to pop.”

But Helen reminds her friends that no matter where life’s rabbit holes lead, the Magnolias will always have each other to lean on through every twist and turn. “When you get tired, you draw on our strength,” she says in the trailer. “And that peak, that view at the top, is going to be sublime.”
Pour it out with the Sweet Magnolias when Season 5 premieres June 11, only on Netflix.
