When a mysterious visitor shows up at a vacation rental, a peaceful summer turns into a waking nightmare. The suspense thriller The Frog follows two men at the mercy of a ruthless killer — or killers — and an ace detective’s pursuit of justice. Starring Kim Yun-seok, Yoon Kye-sang, and Go Min-si, the South Korean series was created by Baeksang Arts Award–winning director Mo Wan-il (The World of the Married) and writer Son Ho-young.
The series portrays people whose fates change in an instant, despite the fact that the characters are near strangers to the murder victims.
“Many things happen and many emotions come and go, but we strongly feel and remember a certain incident at a certain time,” Mo told Netflix. “The Frog is about that moment, that emotion.”

Go Min-si in The Frog
“I hoped that Yeong-ha would be seen as someone who makes mistakes, who makes the wrong choices, who sometimes regrets and agonizes,” Kim told Netflix about the character he portrays. “Someone who we can easily find around us.”
Writer Son added, “Yeong-ha is excessively ordinary as a main character. Because he is ordinary, he makes unexpected choices and becomes more complex.”

Jeon Yeong-ha (Kim) runs a vacation rental home deep in the woods. One summer day, he receives an unexpected guest, Yoo Seong-a (Go), who stays the night with her son, Ha Si-hyeon (Jo). After the guest leaves without a word, Yeong-ha finds traces of blood in the room. Instead of reporting it, he cleans everything up and acts like nothing has happened. Is Seong-a a murderer? And if she ever comes back, will Yeong-ha finally turn her in?
In another quiet town, Koo Sang-jun (Yoon) runs Lakeview Motel with his wife, Seo Eun-gyeong (Ryu). The pair struggle to keep the business afloat and rarely receive enough guests to get by. After a strange and intimidating man arrives to stay the night, Sang-jun and Eun-gyeong’s lives are torn apart.
Can an insightful and dogged detective, Yoon Bo-min (Lee Jung-eun), solve the crimes and help bring peace back to these two small towns?
“I wanted to tell the story of ordinary people who are met with worst-case scenarios and try to protect their everyday lives,” Son told Netflix. “I thought the characters were like trees falling by themselves in the woods. The opening of each episode is the moment they fall that we failed to notice.”

Yoon Kye-sang in The Frog
No, it is not based on a book.
It takes place in the fictional towns of Hosumaeul and Dongho, South Korea.
