A music producer with everything money can buy drowns his sorrows in sleeping pills after his wife leaves him for another man. But there’s a catch. She fully intends to get back with him — after they each spend a year being married to someone else. The K-drama The Trunk follows Jeong-won, who reluctantly agrees to marry In-ji, a wife-for-hire. While Jeong-won fights against his jealousy towards his ex’s new husband, he slowly forges a bond with In-ji, who struggles with shadowy figures from her past. Based on the book of the same name by Kim Ryeo-ryeong, the series was directed by Kim Kyu-tae (Our Blues) and stars Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin.

What happens in The Trunk?

Jeong-won (Gong) is still heartbroken and bitter about his ex-wife, Seo-yeon (Jung), who’s left him for another man. So when he meets In-ji (Seo), he wants absolutely nothing to do with her. Unfortunately for him, however, she’s his new wife. When Jeong-won and Seo-yeon separated, Seo-yeon arranged new marriages for herself and Jeong-won through a secretive service that aims to help people covertly address their relationship troubles. Seo-yeon’s plan is for both her and her ex-husband to live with their respective new spouses for one year — until Jeong-won gets his act together and repents for what he’s done to Seo-yeon. Then, they’ll remarry each other.

Except Seo-yeon is already pretty hot and heavy for her new, younger husband, and Jeong-won’s a mess: He’s depressed and struggling with insomnia, constantly popping sleeping pills and stumbling through life. As he slowly gets to know In-ji, however, despite his resentment toward both her and their arranged marriage, the two begin to uncover a conspiracy involving a mysterious trunk and the corporation that brought them together.
