Welcome to “Meet Cute,” where we get up close and sometimes personal with our newest crush. This time around, we’re chatting with Lucien Laviscount, who plays Emily’s (Lily Collins) charming banker love interest Alfie in Season 2.
Name: Lucien Leon Laviscount Netflix project: Emily in Paris Season 2 Instagram account: @its_lucien DOB: June 9 Astrological Sign: Gemini Hometown: Burnley, Lancashire, England Favorite food: Jerk chicken with rice and peas. Favorite Netflix show: Emily in Paris On a first date, I always… come correct. My perfect date would be… a trip to Antigua. We catching flights! My worst dating experience was… I can’t really remember too much of it. I blanked all of it to be honest. My current Netflix crush is… Lily Collins. My love language is… acts of service.
You’re a Gemini. Are you into astrology? Do you recognize yourself as a Gemini man?
For a long time, I was ashamed of my star sign because it doesn’t really sit too well on the grid of star signs. But I’ve learned to own it. I’m a Gemini through and through. I’m a proud Gemini coming at ya.
A lot of the best male actors are Geminis. Chris Evans, Richard Madden…
Sweet. See, I should never have bothered taking them acting classes now. I’m a Gemini! I had it in the bag anyway.
Are you like Alfie? Do you have any major differences?
We’re probably very similar [in] how brutally honest he is about his feelings and what he wants to do. Where we probably might be different is that he’s a little bit cynical. I’m just not that guy. It takes a few bad things to happen for me to get that cynical, whereas he’s just off the bat like, “Nah. You’re going to show me the goods before I’m going to give anything back.” Whereas I’m like, “Hi guys!” Open hands, open arms.
Early in their courtship, Emily blows up Alfie’s phone. Do you think one of the sweetest moments in the season is that he lets her delete the texts? Many men would either read all of them or write her off immediately.
That’s part of Alfie’s charm. He allows people to make a mess of things, and he’s not going to jump on your case and tell you, “I told you so.” I think that’s his maturity, and that’s his level of being. He’s a real gentleman. He’ll tell you straight. But at the same time, [it’s like], “You maybe shouldn’t have done that. But it’s cool. I’ll let you fix it.”
He leaves room for things.
Yeah! He’s not going to fill the void. He’s going to let you fumble your way through it, but as long as you get there, he’s cool with it. Alfie’s getting cooler and cooler the more I’m talking about him.
My favorite scene of the season is so small. After the “Scents & Sensibility” soccer game, when Alfie and Lily are walking through Paris, he puts his arm around her in such a cuddly way. Was that you or the script?
That was Lucien. After about three takes, we were losing the light, so we had to get it in one [take]. And I was just like, “Let’s give it something. I said, ‘Babe, you cool if we just go with something’?” And [Lily’s] just so open to trying new things. She’s like, “Lucien, it’s cool, whatever. Go for it!” And we got it.
How does it feel to know people everywhere will be like, “I want that.”
This is the first I’m hearing it. It’s great. I think it’s nice to have little moments like that. I think it makes it real. It brings it to life.
What was the most romantic moment of the season, in your opinion?
There’s a couple. The locations are ridiculous. It was so cold that night [on the sightseeing cruise]. But when the Eiffel Tower lights turned on, I swear it was radiating heat. It was one of the moments where [you’re like], “Damn, we’re filming Emily in Paris in Paris. This is real now.” I think I messed up my lines for about four takes. I just couldn’t get my words out. That was a magical moment for me.
It’s fantasy acting at that point. How do you believe you’re in a great suit, there?
It’s like, “Ahhh.” There’s so many moments where you could’ve proposed. You could’ve dropped to a knee in like four, five, seven of the scenes that they managed to pull together.
Did the suits get you in character?
A hundred percent. I did like a six-and-a-half hour fitting on the first day I was allowed out of quarantine. I put the suits on, and I was like, “This is it.” Even Alfie’s walk, his swag, changed. I took one of the suits home with me, and I was strutting up and down the street. I was like, “How’s he going to work his jacket? How’s he going to do little bits and bobs and all that fun stuff?” The suspenders were my idea.
Alfie isn’t impressed by Paris at all. Were you enamored with Paris?
It was my first time in Paris. I was like, “It’s like a whole big museum with the roof blown off.” I was just blown away. Paris is romantic, sexy, mysterious. And it is edgy as well. The cultures. It’s a special place. I don’t really find this in many places, but I think everyone, Parisians, have a way of carrying themselves. Everyone believes in themselves in a way where they don’t need to tell you about it. But they just own it. I don’t think my feet hit the ground. My feet still haven’t hit the ground. I’m wrapped up in this whole world thinking, “Someone gave this opportunity. I just hope I did a good job for them.”
