This post contains major spoilers from The Weekend Away.
Can things get worse when your best friend disappears on what was supposed to be a fun weekend getaway? Yes, they can — and they do — in the mystery thriller The Weekend Away. Beth (Leighton Meester) and Kate (Christina Wolfe) hope to reconnect on a dreamy vacation in Croatia, but when Kate goes missing after a wild night out, the trip turns into a nightmare.
Instead of champagne flights and scenic bike tours, Beth must chase down clues to find her missing friend — until the police find the drowned body of Kate first. From there, things get worse. The police deem Beth a suspect and take her passport away. When she turns to her husband, Rob (Luke Norris), for comfort, she discovers shocking things about their marriage.
With London only a two-hour flight from Croatia, Rob flies in to support Beth. He accompanies Beth to identify Kate’s body and becomes visibly distraught, prompting Beth’s suspicions. Beth requests to see Kate’s body again. Holding Kate’s phone to the corpse, it unlocks, which leads to a chilling discovery of dirty secrets.
Turns out, Rob and Kate were in the throes of a steamy, months-long affair. From Kate’s invasive questions at dinner asking about Rob and Beth’s sex life to secretly hiring escorts to seduce Beth on their night out, suspicions swirl in Beth’s mind over whether it was all a ploy for Kate to sabotage their marriage. But when Beth confronts Rob, with whom she just had a baby, he makes it seem as if he regrets the affair.

Rob’s not the only one on the list of suspects.
Surveillance video shows Pavić (Amar Bukvić), a cop with a history of sexual misconduct who’s assigned to Kate’s case, driving her home the night she went missing. Captures from that night also reveal a man arguing with Kate at the harbor. But before Pavić can be officially investigated, he falls to his death in a confrontation with Beth. With evidence mounting against him, Pavić is charged with Kate’s murder, posthumously.
And just when you think it all ends well, a final twist occurs in the last act. Beth is back in London, separated from Rob and sharing custody of their daughter, Aster. In search of a spare car key during drop-off, Beth reaches into Rob’s coat and — horrifyingly — pulls out a bead that was a part of a necklace Beth had gifted Kate at the beginning of their vacation. Meaning: Rob had secretly made a trip to Croatia in between babysitting and comforting Beth.

The impression we had in the first act, of the good guy — the husband who supports his vacationing wife while holding down the home with their baby — unravels. Desperate, Rob tells Beth the version he wants her to believe: that Kate was in love with him and wanted him to leave Beth for her. But flashbacks reveal the truth: The affair was a regretful fling for Kate and, in a rage at her confession, Rob hits her, causing Kate to tumble onto the rocks and into the waters. Despite Rob’s pleas, Beth lets him know she has Kovač (Iva Mihalić), the Croatian policewoman who was also on the case with Pavić, on the phone hidden inside her jacket pocket, who has alerted British authorities.
While Rob’s admission is a difficult pill to swallow, Beth realizes why Kate wanted to go on the trip in the first place. Kate wanted Beth to find herself again and connect back to who she was before she met Rob because Beth deserved better than him. But as life goes, some sentiments are realized too late (and while Kate’s motives were sweet, her affair with Rob put a damper on what, otherwise, could have been a meaningful and life-affirming trip.)
