Could you swap lives with your best friend who lives across the country? Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher are about to find out in Your Place or Mine, a new romantic comedy directed by Aline Brosh McKenna. Debbie (Witherspoon) and Peter (Kutcher), are friends who have known each other for over a decade and keep in constant contact despite living on different coasts. They’re also total opposites: Single-mom Debbie is an accountant whose Los Angeles life is planned down to the nano-second, while Peter is a marketing executive and aspiring writer whose New York life changes as quickly as he does girlfriends. But when circumstances call for them to take over each others’ homes and responsibilities for a week, they realize that maybe they’ve been living the life they think they should, instead of the one they really need.

“I think of it as a body swapping movie, but without the body swapping,” Brosh McKenna tells Tudum. “They each get to walk a mile in each other’s shoes. And by doing that, they learn things about each other they never would’ve found out otherwise.”
A rom-com veteran who has penned such modern classics as The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses and Morning Glory, and co-created Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with friend Rachel Bloom (who also appears in the film), Brosh McKenna looked to her own life for the inspiration to write Your Place or Mine.

“I went to New York to work on something and I stayed in my friend Ted’s apartment,” she says. “At the time, he was a bachelor, [and] it made me laugh how bachelor-y his apartment was. He still had his silverware in a plastic wrap. So, it made me laugh to think about what would’ve happened if Ted had to come to my house and take care of kids. That was the genesis of it. I actually then cast Ted in the movie playing [a] doorman. So, you can see the inspo for the movie, in the movie.”

Debbie (Witherspoon) and Peter (Kutcher) are best friends and total opposites. She craves routine with her son in Los Angeles; he thrives on change in New York. When they swap houses and lives for a week, they discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.
“If you want to really be a Reese Witherspoon fan, work with Reese Witherspoon because up close and on set, she’s even more spectacular than you think she might be,” Brosh McKenna says of her leading lady, who also worked as a producer on the film. As for Kutcher, the director says she was struck by his level of dedication. “Ashton really, really embraced the character,” she says. “I suggested 10 books for him to read so that he could figure out what Peter’s literary taste was, [and] he read them all. He’s also a superfan of Reese Witherspoon. He really admires her, and I think you can feel it in the movie.”
And what’s a rom-com without scene stealers? Comedy powerhouses Steve Zahn (The White Lotus), Zoë Chao (Senior Year), Tig Notaro (Army of the Dead), Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy), Vella Lovell (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) and Griffin Matthews (Dear White People) star alongside Kutcher and Witherspoon.
“I can’t say enough about the supporting cast,” Brosh McKenna says. “It was so much fun to work with them. They all come from slightly different backgrounds, but I really loved collaborating with each one of them, and they all bring so much to the movie.”
You’ll also want to keep a special eye on newcomer Wesley Kimmel, who plays Debbie’s son Jack. “Wesley really stood out for his performance, but also his passion,” the director adds. “He really felt like the part was written for him. And then he read with Ashton and Reese, and he had great chemistry with both of them. They were already improvising, and it just seemed like such a good fit.”
Mark your calendars for Feb. 10, when Your Place or Mine will stream globally on Netflix, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Not in the mood for romance right now? Brosh McKenna stresses that’s not the only kind of love you’ll find in this rom-com.
“It’s perfect for Valentine’s Day, not just because it’s a love story, but really because there’s a lot of different kinds of love in the movie,” she says. “There’s parental love, friend love, love for a city that you live in. There’s a warmth and a lovingness to the environment that’s created in the movie. [It] was a really fun place to go to every day, and to imagine these people who really treat each other with a lot of kindness and respect.”
