Fans of nefarious government conspiracies and neo-noir satire alike, heads up: They Cloned Tyrone is coming — and it’s going to be wild.
The first trailer for the movie dropped during Netflix’s global fan event, Tudum 2022, which was hosted by the star of the film, Jamie Foxx. (He also produced the movie, because he’s a multihyphenate like that.) Describing the film as a “mind-bending mystery caper,” Foxx said the plot revolves around “a series of eerie events” that put himself, John Boyega and Teyonah Parris “onto the trail of a vast criminal conspiracy.”

The movie’s trailer certainly supports that description, depicting Foxx, Parris, and Boyega apparently stumbling onto some sort of government program that involves wiretaps, experiments, massive laboratories, rollicking church services, cool-looking convertibles and a very charming performance of Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Goin’ Down.” To be fair, maybe all of those things aren’t actually part of the actual conspiracy, but they’re definitely part of the movie.
Written and directed by Juel Taylor (Creed II, Space Jam: A New Legacy), They Cloned Tyrone looks to be a comedic vehicle for all parties involved, including Foxx, who gets to deliver this great kicker in the trailer: “If we’re gonna buy into the insanity, let a pimp freshen up.” Audiences will have to wait a little while to really crack the case, however, as the movie isn’t due to be released until 2023.
With five distinct celebrations, Tudum: A Netflix Global Fan Event includes first-look photos, never-before-seen footage, new trailers, behind-the-scenes access, celebrity appearances, interviews and more from over 100 of your favorite series, films and specials.
