The Mitchells vs. The Machines

Teenager Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson) just wants to make movies. She’s on the brink of going to film school, when a laptop-related mishap throws a wrench in her plans, not to mention her relationship with her parents (voiced by Danny McBride and Maya Rudolph). A family road trip, complete with little brother and dog in tow, seems to be the solution. It’s going medium OK until, as so often happens on family road trips, the Mitchells must do battle with AI-enabled robots in order to save humanity. Adults and kids will love this funny movie packed with celebrity voice cameos (John Legend and Chrissy Teigen!) and messages of inclusivity and acceptance. It was nominated for best animated feature at the Academy Awards, and won that same category at the Annie Awards.

YES DAY

Every parent knows the feeling of arguing with your kids, saying “no” to something over and over and wishing you could just loosen up a little bit and say “yes” — even though the “no” is for their own good. Nobody likes feeling like the bad guy. In Yes Day, mom Allison (Jennifer Garner) discovers that her kids have been calling her a dictator. She and her husband strike a deal with their three children: If they hold up their side of the bargain (chores, grades, general good behavior), they’ll be rewarded with a no-holds-barred “yes day” of fun where their parents say “yes” to everything, no bad-cop mom in sight. Can the whole family make it through? A word of warning to parents watching with their kids: Be prepared for your offspring to ask for a “yes day” of their own.

Enola Holmes

Everyone knows the story of ace detective Sherlock Holmes, but you also need to know his little sister, Enola. Played by Millie Bobby Brown, the teenage Enola is every bit as sharp as her famous older brother, and she gets the chance to put her mystery-solving skills to the test when her mother goes missing. The only thing better than this slickly designed, stylish and eminently watchable mystery is that the fun doesn’t have to end when the credits roll: Families can move right into Enola Holmes 2, in which the plucky teen detective starts her own agency and searches for a missing girl

Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling

One of the most fun things about being a parent is getting to introduce your kids to things you loved when you were their age. Enter Rocko’s Modern Life, a childhood favorite of many a millennial parent. In Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, the star of the classic Nickelodeon show, Rocko the wallaby, is back. The special, clocking in at 45 minutes, is perfect for that predinner “so… now what?” gap. It finds Rocko and his pals returning after being stuck in space for 20 years. Their goal, dropped into this unfamiliar modern life (had to), is to find the creator of their favorite show, The Fatheads, and get it back on the air. Static Cling is a madcap adventure and a great way for grown-ups to have a hit of nostalgia while kids get a taste of the good ol’ days — when wallabies in Hawaiian shirts just wanted to watch TV.

Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical

Singing, a viral dance sequence and little girls who overcome all odds to prevail? Count us in. This new, lavish adaptation of Matilda is sure to capture the imagination of adults and kids alike and have them dreaming of shuffle-ball-changing their way to justice, no matter the obstacles. High-production value and instantly hummable songs help make Matilda the Musical a magical way to pass the afternoon. Also magical: the title character’s telekinesis.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Legendary director Guillermo del Toro may have reimagined the classic children’s story for his Oscar-winning animated take on Pinocchio, but don’t let that convince you that this movie is just for kids. In fact, the stop-motion retelling is recommended for older kids and adults, given some of its serious real-world themes. Get ready for a visually rich journey across the world and even into the underworld in the pursuit of family, truth and conscience. As a bonus, Sebastian J. Cricket (jiminy, wonder what the J stands for) is voiced by none other than Ewan McGregor, a fun touch.

We Can Be Heroes

If you just can’t get enough of Pedro Pascal saving the world, cue up 2020’s We Can Be Heroes, which has both family and heroics in spades. Pascal plays Marcus Moreno, the (literally) magnetic leader of the appropriately named superhero group the Heroics and father to Missy, who doesn’t seem to have any superpowers — despite her bloodline. When aliens attack and the Heroics turn out to fight them, their kids work together to help and show just how powerful they can be. There’s something for everyone in this Robert Rodriguez-directed movie, a kind of Avengers-style superhero romp geared toward the younger set.

Whether you’re packing your bags to see the reigning queen of pop with your family or just scrolling social media and mourning your inability to get tickets to the Eras Tour, the feature-length concert film, captured at Taylor Swift’s 2018 performance in Arlington, Texas, gives everyone a front-row seat. From opener “...Ready for It?” to the mash-up of “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” and “We Are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together” that closed the show, the set list is a bop, through and through, with plenty of special effects and giant snakes to boot.

Home

How far away are your spring break travels taking you? How about… to another planet? In the animated 2015 movie Home, the goofy Boov alien race stages a “friendly invasion” of Earth, displacing many humans from their homes in Australia. It’s a fun, silly entry to the science fiction genre for kids, with a message of unlikely friendship and cooperation (one of the aliens teams up with a 13-year-old searching for her mom) and plenty of one-liners, plus a voice cast including Jim Parsons, Rihanna and Steve Martin, among others, to keep adults’ attention.

The Pink Panther

The world’s zaniest detective, Inspector Jacques Clouseau, is once again on the case. Whether he’ll solve it… remains to be seen. Steve Martin returns in this 2006 reboot of the classic Pink Panther franchise, complete with trench coat and silly mustache. As Clouseau fumbles his way through a murder case that results in the disappearance of the legendary Pink Panther diamond, adults and kids will love the twists and turns of the globe-trotting comedic mystery. This spring break, with the help of The Pink Panther, take a scenic trip through France with your whole family.

How to Train Your Dragon

You can use your kids’ time off school to go on a total escapist adventure with them, courtesy of How to Escape Your Dragon. We check in on Berk, a Viking village entirely unlike anywhere we live, one where magic is real and dragons frequently attack. Teenager Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) dreams of becoming a dragon slayer, but he doesn’t quite fit the super-macho stereotype. The dragon he captures and befriends doesn’t fit the stereotype of bloodthirsty destroyer of villages — Hiccup names him Toothless before setting him free. How to Train Your Dragon shows that looks can be deceiving and that the best way to find out why someone is doing something is to ask them outright. The movie was nominated for best animated feature at the Academy Awards and has an all-star voice cast with Kristen Wiig, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera and more.
